This scholarship has been established to honour the memory of Professor Val Curtis, who worked at LSHTM for 30 years and led the Environmental Health Group. Professor Curtis was a leading global figure in WASH and her work saved many lives. She valued creativity. lateral thinking and the application of interdisciplinary methods to solve problems.
Founded in 1899 at the London Docks, LSHTM is now based in Bloomsbury, where it has two main sites at Keppel Street and Tavistock Place, and additional sites in The Gambia and Uganda. This 2024-25 Val Curtis Memorial Scholarship will award scholarships up to the value of GBP 4,000.00, and is intended to help fund research and travel costs associated with the MSc projects with a WASH focus. The total funding may be awarded to a single student or split between up to 8 students (minimum award amount of GBP 500.00).
This scholarship is only open to students currently registered on an intensive MSc at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Funding is only available for projects with a WASH focus, projects looking at water- related, sanitation-related, handwashing or hygiene-related topics would be considered eligible for this funding.
The scholarship is open to students who are nationals from a country in Sub-Saharan Africa (as per the World Bank list), or India. Students returning to their home-country for the MSc project may apply for this travelling scholarship as long as their project is not desk-based.
