LSHTM 2025 Val Curtis Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to honour the memory of Professor Val Curtis, who worked at LSHTM for 30 years and led the Environmental Health Group. Professor Curtis was a leading global figure in WASH and her work saved many lives. She valued creativity. lateral thinking and the application of interdisciplinary methods to solve problems.

Val Curtis Memorial Scholarship

Aim and Benefits of Val Curtis Memorial Scholarship

This 2024-25 Val Curtis Memorial Scholarship will award scholarships up to the value of GBP 4,000.00, and is intended to help fund research and travel costs associated with the MSc projects with a WASH focus. The total funding may be awarded to a single student or split between up to 8 students (minimum award amount of GBP 500.00).

Requirements for Val Curtis Memorial Scholarship Qualification

This scholarship is only open to students currently registered on an intensive MSc at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Funding is only available for projects with a WASH focus, projects looking at water- related, sanitation-related, handwashing or hygiene-related topics would be considered eligible for this funding.

The scholarship is open to students who are nationals from a country in Sub-Saharan Africa (as per the World Bank list), or India. Students returning to their home-country for the MSc project may apply for this travelling scholarship as long as their project is not desk-based.

How to Apply

• Log in to the Scholarships Application Portal via e-vision using your LSHTM login details.
• Please search for ‘Val Curtis Memorial Scholarship’ if you wish to apply for this funding, and then answer all the questions online and attach any documents required as part of your application.
  • Application Form – can be accessed by clicking here. Please complete all tabs of the excel document, which includes:
    • Application Form – Complete all information on this tab of the excel document.
    • Budget – The budget should provide a full list of projected costs for the MSc project, and include justification for the costs. Please highlight which costs are to be covered by the scholarship, as well as show details of how other costs will be covered.
    • Timetable – Please provide a timetable for the project work.
  • Supervisor Letter of Support – Applicants will need to upload a supporting letter from their supervisor for the proposed project work for which they are requesting funding. You will not be able to submit your application without attaching this letter to your online application.
• Once you are happy with all your responses you can press submit and you should receive a confirmation of receipt email at your LSHTM email address.
• The scholarships portal will not be able to accept applications after the deadline stated below.
• The Scholarships team will be in touch with an outcome in due course.
