On 1953, after all the chaos have ended, it seemed the wish to establish its own public university appeared again since Solo is known as the center of the original Java’s culture, and there’s a big potential in teaching field, be it teacher staffs or students. So, the founding committee was formed, with Mohammad Saleh, the mayor back then, as the leader. Unfortunately, the effort was unsuccessful even before it was started.
The causes of it were the lack of economy be it regional or central government, the desire of some factions to establich their own private universities, and also the lack of sympathy from some Gajah Mada University’s peoples. And so, because of many obstacles, such as the commotion between political parties to fight for power in government and city development that was going on back then, have made the idea vanished.
Ten years later, on 1963, Kota Praja Surakarta University (UPKS) suddenly appeared. This university was initiated by the regional government back then, which led by Utomo Ramelan. At this time too, the Communist Party was growing fast, affected various life matters back then. It also affected UPKS, knowledge about socialism was growing in the university’s education system. And then when G30 S incident occurred in Indonesia, eventually this university closed down not long after that because all socialism/communism things have been banned.
