David Eade Undergraduate Piano Scholarship was formed to assist in the education and training of undergraduate classical piano students at the New Zealand School of Music at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington.
This scholarship was established in 2023 through a bequest from David Philps Eade to assist classical pianists studying at the New Zealand School of Music.

Aim and Benefits of Victoria University of Wellington David Eade Undergraduate Piano Scholarship
David Eade Undergraduate Piano Scholarship value is $10,000 per year for 3 years
The scholarship is to cover stipend, and other activities that are related to piano studies at the New Zealand School of Music.
If no suitable candidate is found for any category, the fund can be held or redistributed into other categories.

Requirements for Victoria University of Wellington David Eade Undergraduate Piano Scholarship Qualification
- This scholarship will be open to undergraduate classical piano students intending to enrol Te K?k? New Zealand School of Music.
- Applicants need to be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
Additional information
- Recipients must write a letter of thanks the family of the donor.
- Recipients will be expected to perform in a concert honouring the memory of David P Eade.
- Minimum grades of B+ in all courses is required to keep the undergraduate scholarship over the full tenure.
- The recipient will be expected to demonstrate engagement and contribute to the community and environment of the New Zealand School of Music. This may include but is not limited to, participation in ensembles, presentations, or performances at NZSM or University events.
Interview date, Process and Venue for Victoria University of Wellington David Eade Undergraduate Piano Scholarship
Selection will be based on:
- Current NCEA progress.
- The performance submitted as part of the scholarship specific documentation outlined below.
The successful recipient will be selected by the Director of the New Zealand School of Music, the Head of Piano Studies and Diedre Irons (as delegated by the donor).
Documents Required for Application
- Two references (to be requested via the online application) – one character reference and one academic reference.
- Provide a web link to a recent performance (less than 6 months old)
- Four pieces of contrasting mood, tempo & style, including:
- Any composition of Bach, Scarlatti or Handel
- A fast movement from a work by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert
- One Romantic composition
- One 20th-/21st-century work
- One of the four pieces must be a virtuosic etude, which can replace either a romantic or contemporary work.
