The Sir William Gallagher Cyber Security Scholarship was established in 2015 to support academically talented students studying towards a Master of Cyber Security at the University of Waikato. Sir William Gallagher is a long-standing supporter of the University of Waikato and Hamiltonbased Gallagher is one of the world’s leading technology innovators in physical security systems. The Scholarship provides students studying in the Master of Cyber Security Programme with financial support and industry experience through a research project at Gallagher. One Scholarship will be offered each year until 2024.

1. The Scholarship will have a value of up to $20,000 with the value awarded dependent on the paper enrolment (as outlined in clause 1.2.1)
2. The Scholarship will be paid as outlined follows:
2.1. $7,000 will be credited directly to the tuition fees for the Master of Cyber Security (including the Student Services Fee (SSF)). The credit will be processed upon confirmation of the recipient’s enrolment in either COMPX592 (60-point dissertation) or COMPX593 (90-point thesis) as part of the Master of Cyber Security. Any remaining funds from the $7,000 will be forfeited.
2.2. $13,000 will be paid directly into the recipient’s bank account in equal monthly instalments over the 12 months tenure.
2.3. The offer of a Scholarship must be accepted by the due date, or the offer will lapse. The offer will be conditional on the successful candidate maintaining all eligibility requirements outlined in Clause 1
2.4. In accepting the Scholarship, the recipient will be deemed to have read, understood, and accepted the conditions of the Scholarship and the Scholarships Policy.
2.5. The Scholarship will have a tenure of up to 12 months, beginning from the enrolment start date of the dissertation/thesis during A Trimester in the year following application.
1. To be eligible, candidates must:
1.1. be commencing enrolment in A Trimester (in the year following application) in one of the following as part of the Master of Cyber Security (MCS) at the University of Waikato: a) COMPX592 – Dissertation (60-points); or b) COMPX593 – Computer Science thesis (90-points). Note that enrolment in COMPX593 will be at the discretion of the Head of School and may be taken in place of COMPX592 and the two elective papers in Part 1 of the Master of Cyber Security degree.
1.2. have completed the majority of taught papers for Part 1 of the Master of Cyber Security by the end of the year of application.
1.3. have achieved at least a ‘B+’ grade-point-average (GPA) for their most recent 120- points of study (the 120-points of study must have been undertaken at a New Zealand university); a) Candidates will be ranked by GPA, with emphasis placed on those with papers most relevant to the area of specialisation proposed for the MCS degree. b) Grades for industry placement papers will not be considered.
1.4. have strong interest in the field of cyber security, show innovative thinking and/or entrepreneurship ability (particularly through previous initiatives and project work), and have career aspirations in the field of cyber security; and
1.5. be a New Zealand Citizen, New Zealand Permanent Resident, New Zealand Resident class visa holder, Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident domiciled in New Zealand or an international student. Sir William Gallagher Cyber Security Scholarship – 2024
2. To maintain their eligibility, the successful recipient must:
2.1. enrol in COMPX592 or COMPX593 as part of the Master of Cyber Security commencing in A Trimester in the year following application; and
2.2. discuss their MCS research topic with their University of Waikato supervisor and the Gallagher Group to ensure that it is industry-based and of relevance to Gallagher Group. Gallagher Group will confirm this has been achieved through [email protected] and/or the Development Office. Meet any reporting milestones of the research project established at the start of the project.
3. Throughout the course of the Scholarship tenure, the recipient may have the opportunity to gain work experience with Gallagher Group. Any work experience will be paid employment outside the scope of this Scholarship.
The days and hours of any such employment will be discussed and mutually agreed to by the student and Gallagher Group and will not be at the expense of the student’s research and/or study.
