The Broad Memorial Scholarship (previously the Broad Memorial Fund till 2024) was established in 1983 in memory of Dr Jon Broad and his daughter Philippa Broad who both died in the November 1979 Mount Erebus air disaster. Mrs. Margaret Broad provided initial funds, with further donations received from colleagues and friends of the deceased. Dr Philippa Broad, an alumna of the University, had intended to start a Master of Science in Earth Sciences at the time of the disaster. The funds are held in the Foundation and one scholarship will be offered annually until 2030 when it is anticipated that the funds will be fully depleted.
