Each year The University of Manchester awards Equity and Merit Scholarships to academically excellent students from Sub-Saharan Africa who have the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable development in their home countries. Across the globe, countries face many developmental challenges, and their brightest young minds have the aptitude and the will to make a difference. Our Equity and Merit Programme helps them to do this. Each postgraduate course has been created with the specific conditions of these countries in mind and endeavours to fill the skills gaps that exist there, from power engineering to global urban development. The scholarships empower young professionals from the Global South to address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and advance themselves and their wider society. The scholarships are jointly funded by the University and its donors. The University covers students’ tuition fees in full and the generosity of our donors pays for students’ living expenses, flights to the UK and visas. The awards are intended for those who couldn’t afford to study in Manchester without a scholarship. We are committed to a policy of equal opportunity and all applications are considered on their merit. We particularly encourage women to apply. We offer two types of scholarship:
There are 30 scholarships (20 for full-time study and 10 for online study) available each year for a wide range of courses in engineering, environment, health sciences, development, education, textiles and law. The scheme is open to applicants from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Each has an innovative and inspiring history which we continue to build on, through ground-breaking research and as a centre of educational excellence.... continue reading
