F A Hayek Scholarship at University of Canterbury for Honours or Masters in Economics or Political Science for the academic year 2021-2022
Each year, a student is offered the F A Hayek scholarship towards an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics or Political Science at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. The general conditions for the scholarship are as for the University of Canterbury Master’s Scholarship. The Scholarship is open for domestic and international students. The scholarship was established in 1994 by a gift from Alan Gibbs.
Established in 1873 Canterbury College, as it was then known, was only the second university in Aotearoa New Zealand. It was set up on the Oxbridge model with one major difference: women students were admitted from the start. An early graduate, Helen Connon, became the first woman in the then British Empire to win honours. Housed in graceful stone buildings on a central city block, the College was dependent on rents from high country farms with which it had been endowed by the Canterbury Provincial Council. Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $16,500
The scholarship is tenable by students enrolled in a programme for a master’s or an honours degree in Economics or Political Science at the University with a course weighting in the range 0.75-1.50 EFTS. Such a programme must include a research component of at least 30 points.The scholarship is tenable in either part one or part two of a two-year master’s degree programme. It is also tenable for 180-point, one-year master’s degrees offered by the Department of Political Science or the Department of Economics and Finance.
