This scholarship was founded in 1946 from a bequest of £35,000 from Dr WM Strong of Port Moresby, with the aim of encouraging education and research in subjects relevant to the particular needs of the then territory of Papua.
When William Charles Wentworth proposed the idea of Australia’s first university in 1850, he imagined “the opportunity for the child of every class to become great and useful in the destinies of this country”.
