The FirstRand Foundation, the corporate foundation of South African financial institution FirstRand Limited is partnering with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education to set up a scholarship programme to enable outstanding South African students to study for MSc degrees at IHE Delft in the Netherlands.
The scholarship programme will run for five years and provides full funding for one student per year to study for a MSc in Water and Sustainable Development at IHE Delft. Scholarship winners will be selected based on their academic merit and potential.
“We are looking forward to working with some of South Africa’s brightest students, thanks to the partnership with the FirstRand Foundation. With a looming water crisis, South Africa, like so many other countries, needs talented future water leaders, women as well as men, who are able to come up with smart water sector policies and solutions,” said IHE Delft Rector Eddy Moors.
IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and is based in Delft, the Netherlands. The Institute confers fully accredited MSc degrees, and PhD degrees in collaboration with partner universities.

The scholarship will provide full funding to study for an MSc in Water and Sustainable Development at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education.
FirstRand and IHE Delft are looking for the best applicant who will benefit deeply from the opportunity and contribute to South Africa on their return.
The successful candidates will have excelled academically in their chosen field and will have been able to demonstrate:
Candidates who are currently, or have been studying overseas for degree purposes, will not be considered for this scholarship.
Successful candidates are required to return to South Africa for at least five years after completing their studies.
Scholarship candidates will be interviewed and selected in a process that will run concurrently with the FirstRand Foundation’s International Postgraduate Scholarship programme. Criteria include academic excellence, leadership ability, community involvement and the candidates’ potential to be destiny changers.
Applications, including all attachments and reference letters, must be completed online and applicants must have applied directly to the university of their choice by the time the application for the scholarship is submitted.
Applicants need to submit the acceptance letter from their university of choice as soon as it is received to [email protected], no later than 6 April 2023.
Applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Decisions of the adjudication panels are final and correspondence regarding their decisions will not be entered into. The panels reserve the right not to make an award.
Applications open 16 December 2022 and close 2 March 2023. No late applications will be accepted.
Before applying for the scholarship, prospective students first need to apply and be admitted to the MSc in Water and Sustainable Development from IHE Delft.
