Flinders University 2025 Movember Institute of Men’s Health Indigenous PhD Scholarship

They are seeking an outstanding candidate for a full-time Indigenous PhD scholarship as part of a national project associated with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning arm of Movember’s newly established Indigenous Social and Emotional Wellbeing portfolio. This exciting project is a partnership between Flinders Health & Medical Research Institute (https://www.flinders.edu.au/fhmri) and the Movember Institute of Men’s Health (https://ex.movember.com/movember-institute). 

This PhD scholarship offers a unique opportunity for a high achieving graduate from a public health, psychology, allied health, gender studies, community development, anthropology or sociology background to undertake an evaluative research project relating to Indigenous men’s social and emotional wellbeing. This will be an applied, pragmatic, interdisciplinary research opportunity to undertake either a qualitative or mixed-methods study. It will require an ability to work in a culturally sensitive way with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and organisations; and a willingness to work with key local, national and international industry partners, such as Movember. The candidate will join a team of Australia’s leading researchers in Indigenous men’s health, health promotion, and social and emotional wellbeing.

Aim and Benefits of Movember Institute of Men’s Health Indigenous PhD Scholarship

The scholarship includes:

• A stipend valued at $51,500* per annum (2025 rate) tax free
• The scholarship will be awarded for 3 years
• The opportunity to engage in research related travel (funded separately) to multiple regional, rural and remote communities across Australia
• Access to targeted professional development opportunities, including conference attendance support, industry mentorship, and involvement in team capacity building activities
• Additional support will be provided to facilitate research fieldwork, specific to the project
• A Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to cover tuition fees for Australian Citizens, NZ Citizens and Permanent Residents.

Requirements for Movember Institute of Men’s Health Indigenous PhD Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for the award of this scholarship a student must:

• Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
• Be an Australian citizen
• Meet PhD admission requirements including: have an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8), including a research component of at least 6 months’ full-time study achieving Distinction (75%) OR including evidence of equivalent research experience, such as a substantial first-author refereed publication or track record as an investigator on a competitive grant; and
• Be available to commence as a full-time PhD student at Flinders University in semester 2, 2025.

Prior to submitting an application for the scholarship, prospective applicants are advised to contact the Project Co-lead, Professor James Smith via email [email protected] to discuss your interest and eligibility for the opportunity.  The Project lead may invite you to apply and request examples of previous academic work (e.g. publications), and a copy of your CV together with a covering letter outlining your relevant qualifications, experience, research experience and reasons for applying for the scholarship. We also encourage students nearing the completion of honours or who may wish to study part-time to make contact if they are interested in pursuing a PhD in this area.

Applicants will be short-listed and interviews will be held in early April 2025. Outcomes will be released by late April 2025.

The successful candidate will ideally begin by 1 July 2025, subject to negotiation.
