Call for Applications: AWHF My African Heritage Competition 2024

On the occasion of the celebrations of Africa World Heritage Day, under the theme “My African Heritage”, the African World Heritage Fund is calling on all Africans to participate in the celebration of African heritage during the Africa Month. Stand a chance to win a weekend visit to an amazing African World Heritage site by entering AWHF’s #MyAfricanHeritage Competition comencing on African World Heritage Day (5 May) and ending on Africa Day (25 May). This competition aims to raise awareness and appreciation of the significance of World Heritage in Africa as well as the need to preserve African heritage values, wealth, and diversity. The competition is open to all Africans living in Africa or in the diaspora.

Participants are invited to use the hashtag (#MyAfricanHeritage) to share a photo, video or written post on AWHF social media network (Facebook, X, Instagram and LinkedIn) addressing the theme “My African Heritage” and tag the African World Heritage Fund.

About African World Heritage Fund (AWHF)

The main objective of the Fund is to address the challenges faced by the African State Parties in the implementation of the 1972 Convention concerning the protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, specifically, the underrepresentation of African sites on the World Heritage List and the insufficient conservation and management of these sites. AWHF became formally a Category II Centre under the auspices of UNESCO in 2010 hence an official partner of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre. Aim and Benefits of My African Heritage Competition

A weekend trip to a World Heritage Site. The prize includes a round-trip flight ticket (in economy class), accommodation, meals paid for 2 nights.

Requirements for My African Heritage Competition Qualification

Participation should respect the following rules:

• To participate in the competition, participants are required to prepare a short video and/or photo depicting their interpretation of what “My African Heritage” symbolizes to them.
• All posts should use the hashtag #MyAfricanHeritage and tag at least one of the following handles:
  • X (Twitter): @African_WH_Fund
  • Facebook and Instagram: @africanworldheritagefund
  • Instagram: @African World Heritage Fund (AWHF)
• The entrants may participate on multiple social media platforms.
• The supporting caption/text should explain why the heritage depicted in the photo or video is of special significance to the participant and what African heritage means to them.
• Posts should be made in one of the four official languages of the African Union (English, French, Arabic and Portuguese).
• Photos and videos must be of high resolution and the video should not exceed 4 minutes.
• Posts must be posted in public mode between 5 May and 25 May.
• The number of posts is unlimited.
• All content shared must be the property of the participant. The AWHF takes no responsibility for intellectual property issues that might arise.

Interview date, Process and Venue for My African Heritage Competition

An independent jury will evaluate the posts based on the following criteria:

1. The relevance of the posts (i.e., the message conveyed) in relation to the theme “My African Heritage”.
2. The engagement metrics such as likes, shares, and reactions.
