Studying a research degree shouldn't be determined by your background or financial status, but we recognise that many capable future researchers are deterred because of funding.
The Bristol Postgraduate Research Scholarships are available across all faculties.
Before the University of Bristol, there was University College, Bristol University College, Bristol existed from 1876 to 1909 and was the precursor to the University of Bristol. Its history can be traced back to the efforts of John Percival, headmaster of Clifton College, to press for the establishment of such an institution. In 1872, Percival wrote to the Oxford colleges observing that the provinces lacked a university culture. Our scholarships provide the same level of funding as the major Research Councils, which include full fee funding and a stipend to cover living costs.
The stipend changes each year in line with national recommendations. For 2023-24 this is £18,622 annually for full-time study.
