The British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) invites graduate students, early career researchers and practitioners to submit their paper abstracts for the 2023 Graduate Conference. We welcome papers addressing any topic on ethnicity and national identity in Africa. Papers related to BIEA thematic areas and topics in ‘minority’, ‘marginalised’, and ‘Indigenous’ categories of group identification are especially encouraged.

The British Institute in Eastern Africa has been active since 1960 and has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The Institute exists to promote research in all the disciplines in the humanities and social sciences within the wider region of eastern Africa. It has a strong tradition of research in anthropology, archaeology, history and linguistics, and recent projects have embraced political, environmental and development studies, geography, public health, and art and performance. Successful applicants will be informed by 31st July 2023. Full Paper submission deadline 20th October 2023.
