The Shirley and Joseph Boscov Scholars program is the premier award for outstanding local high school graduates attending Alvernia University who thrive in the classroom as well as outside through volunteer and community involvement.
The scholarship has been established to help committed and hard working students realize their dream of a quality, private, higher education right here in Berks County.
The roots of Alvernia University were planted in 1926 when the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis established an orphanage in the building now known as Francis Hall; eventually the orphanage became an elementary school. Beginning as a college for the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters in 1958, the institution became a four-year liberal arts school. Alvernia received its charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1960. Alvernia soon opened its doors to female students from the laity while the first male students were enrolled in 1971. Boscov Scholars are new students matriculating full time at Alvernia who are residents of Berks county and recent high school graduates (within one calendar year). In addition, candidates should also possess the following qualities:
Scholars will automatically be enrolled into the University Honors Program
The scholarship is automatically awarded upon review of your application by our Admissions Staff and is renewable as long as recipients maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, continue be a full time student and engage in service to the University and the community.
