This program is a direct effort to address the lack of US work experience barriers that skilled immigrant professionals face and racial and economic disparities in the field. The initiative will place ten talented, diverse, and multilingual Black immigrant professionals from Africa and the Caribbean in a three-month paid fellowship in a non-clinical position with one of the leading hospitals in the Greater Boston region. Through the training and internship, participants will gain the needed work experience to access jobs in the industry and advance their careers.
Since 2012, a grassroots team of like-minded African immigrants and non-Africans decided to tackle these problems affecting their communities in the greater Boston area. Their collaborative efforts resulted in the founding of the African Bridge Network (ABN) in March of 2015. After a free four-week workforce readiness training, the fellows will access paid work experience of 30 hours per week at one of Boston’s top hospitals. The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to provide a career-specific, in-house experience in a non-clinical position that the fellows can leverage in their future careers. The fellowship will either be an in-person or a hybrid experience depending on the host organization’s COVID-19 health and safety measures. Either experience will aim to maximize the relationship building and work environment exposure for the fellow.
